International Women’s Day (IWD) stands as a global celebration, recognizing women’s achievements across the world.
The celebration each year, serves as a reminder of the progress made towards gender equality while emphasizing the ongoing efforts required.
This year’s theme “Inspire Inclusion” speaks about the importance of diversity and empowerment across all aspects of society and the role of inclusion in achieving gender equality.
As we continue to celebrate women’s achievements globally, we shine the spotlight on an entrepreneur whose journey exemplifies the spirit of female empowerment.
Safia Assimiwu was inspired by the handiwork of a woman she met 9 years ago who was into making beaded accessories.
With the guidance of the woman, Safia started learning how to make beaded accessories and later expanded into making African clothing.
“It takes a while to realize your potential. So when I found myself in this field, I realized this is what I want to do and I started pursuing it till now”
Her brand, Sasacreations, now makes and sells African earrings, clothing, bangles, caps, bags, necklaces, kids’ wear beaded bags, necklaces, earrings anklets, waist beads, sandals, etc.
“I wouldn’t say starting a business depends on capital. It is the potential, the dream, or the passion you have.”
Safia’s story of becoming a business owner is an example of how women can encourage, support, and mentor one another to create a path to success and overcome the barrier of inequality.
